It is about a boy who goes to live in the wilderness. He is very resourceful!
He catches and trains a falcon to help him hunt, and I think he had a dog or an otter or something.
Then he goes to the library in town and meets the librarian and his dad comes and wants him to come home, but he dosen't want to.

My Side of the Mountain, is (I think) the one you are referring to. It is part of a trilogy, though, which includes On the Far Side of the Mountain, and Frightful's Mountain as well.
I think that the other animal you are referring to (besides the falcon) is a weasel or a badger...something of that sort.
