The family are the four characters. The father, the mother, and the sister and brother. The son is Gregor Samsa and he awoke one morning to find that he had been turned into a beetle (not a cockroach!) He had a difficult getting around and his bedroom was between his parents' and his sister's bedrooms. Grete is Gregor's sister. In the beginning she feels sorry for Gregor and she feeds him. Her mother is mortified and cried, and the father threw an apple at him and it got stuck in his back and hurt Gregor. Things keep deteriorating and Gregor's boss takes a look at the situation and fires him. This is a much longer story, but at the ending, the maid has thrown out Gregor's hulk and the parents have an agreement to find Grete a husband, probably to take over Gregor's work. I have not mentioned what things stood for, or mean so you made need to add that.
