Okay, I tried posting this question in the diabetic section but only one guy answered me and I think he was just being a jerk. I had a blood test done simply for insurance purposes. At the time I had no clue I was even pregnant. Actually the test took place about two days after I would have concieved. So I don't think my pregnancy had anything to do with the results. The test said everything was normal but my fasting glucose level was low. It was 50 when the range should have been 60 plus. (the guy told me that meant I would be suffering brain damage but I don't really think that is true because then he made a comment about blondes being stupid) What exactly does this mean? Should I mention it to my obgyn at my next appt.?

Oh, maybe I made it confusing... sorry. It was not the insurance guy who said that stuff, it was someone on the diabetes board where I originally asked the question... they aren't so friendly over there I guess.

YES, you need to talk to your doctor. You may be a hypoglycemic, which could cause your blood sugars to drop too low and it could cause a miscarriage. I have Type 2 diabetes and because of my blood sugar levels bouncing around I had 3 early miscarriages before I had my son. Also people that are hypoglycemic have a higher chance of becoming diabetic later in life because their pancreas is over-exerting and can basically "Wear-out".

"A level of 50 mg/dL is thought to affect brain function"

But I would call my OBs office (ugh well actually I would call my midwife I hate OBs) first thing Monday and tell them that you have some concerns regarding a glucose test done a few weeks ago. You will probably have to sign a form giving the OB access to the test results, that can be done by fax/e-mail.

Make sure the OB sees the results as soon as possible.

Sorry I don't know much about glucose levels during pregnancy except that on "Birth Stories" they kept yelling at a diabetic mother because her levels were too low (but those weren't fasting levels).

it means you should have a snack every 2-3 hrs, generally when your sugar dips you can feel it(i little light-headed or dizzyiness) drink a glass of juice, of course mention to your obgyn typically a glucose test is done around 29 wks(to test for high blood sugar) maybe they will want to do yours a lil earlier but if you have a light snack between meals or a glass of juice you should be fine, good luck congrats

Mention it to your OB. You don't have brain damage. It means your blood sugar was a little low. If you have normal blood sugar levels, 50 would just mean you were hungry. I am sure you are fine. Just be consistent with meals/snacks while pregnant.

That insurance guy was way off base. You need to discuss his comments with his boss. I wouldn't allow that insurance company to do business with me.

Not sure what it means but I would mention it to my OBGYN for sure!
