A lawyer can tell you not to answer questions that might provide the police information to help convict you. Lets face it they are professionals and you are not, if you are being questioned by the police your probably going to be a little on "edge" and the lawyer will be far less so.

It gives the suspect someone with legal training and experience to advise and offset the power of the Government when accused of a crime. It helps ensure a level playing field.
