Hi -
Newborns sleep as much as 16 hours a day (or even more).
check the following sites

But for your own peace of mind, call your pediatrician. when in doubt call her doctor. Don't feel bad or embarrassed that is what they are there for.
Congratulations on your baby girl :-)

Newborn babies sleep. A lot. It's okay and normal and healthy...
Sometimes children can be affected by the drugs most moms get during labor. The doctors say it doesn't pass to the babies, but it is my belief it does. I have had 4 babies and the first one was the only one where I succumbed to the meds, but never again. My little girl wouldn't wake up for almost 3 weeks. That's how long it took for her system to become rid of the chemicals. Very scary, especially for first time moms. My other 3 kiddos were all natural and 2 born at home and we never had any of these problems at all. Hang in there hon and make sure she's nursing and latching on well and she's having plenty of wet and dirty diapers. If she's breastfed, it's okay if there aren't many poops but make sure she's wet at least 8 per day.
***Some tips to cope...
-Take a cool (not COLD) wet washcloth and gently wipe the bottoms of her feet to wake her to eat.
- Keep her on the cool side in the house. Don't keep her in 15 layers of blankets. The rule of thumb is one more layer than you are comfortable wearing at that time.
- Sleep when she sleeps. If you have other kids to watch, sorry this won't work. It's only for that blessed first time mommy time. ;)
- She's too young by a long shot to even think about getting on a schedule. Feed her when she's hungry, even if it's every hour.
-Email me if you need late night support anytime. ;) I understand, as do many other moms out there. Make sure you're taking some time for yourself, even if it's reading a magazine on the toilet. :) I hope you have people in your life who are nearby to help you...
- Make sure YOU'RE the one feeding and tending to the baby, not the folks helping you. They can do the laundry, cooking, cleaning, errands and other tasks, you'll never get this time back with your new daughter. You can't believe how many grandmas and aunties just take over the baby duty while mom does chores. This is a big No No! :)
Many blessings to you, I'll be praying for you tonight.

It is my understanding that a newborn sleeps up to 20 hours/day. Was there medications in the birth? She may be hung over. She is eating. If you are worried, call the pediatrician in the morning. You need some rest too. Sleep when she is sleeping.

Normally newborns need to be fed every 4 hrs or so. Does yours takes its milk regularly? If yes then you need not worry about it sleeping longer.
By the way enjoy your peace and quietness for the time being because once your baby started getting vocal and more hyper and sleep lesser you will wish for the early days.

Yes, it is normal. She was early so she needs some extra rest. My kids were all 3 weeks or more early and that is all they did for the first couple of months.

I wouldn't worry about her ... you are really very lucky to have gotten a 'really quiet baby' who is happy just eating and sleeping. Give her some time to 'catch up' and she'll be 'wailing and keeping you awake all night' often enough ... but for now be assured that she is quite 'normal' ... for a 'quiet baby.'
