This will depend on which type you have. Plecostomous (pleco - see photo: http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/411.htm ) and otocinclus (http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/615.htm ) can be given algae wafers, slices of zucchini or cucumbers, peas or lima beans with the outer skin removed, or pieces of dark leafy greens (romaine lettuce, collards, kale, dandelion, beet tops, etc.) although you'll need a feeding clip or some gravel to hold these in place to keep them from floating. The plecos also eat crustaceans as part of their wild diet, so give then some shrimp pellets from time to time. Some species of plecos like driftwood to scrape.

If you have a Chinese algae eater (http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/638.htm ), these only eat algae when they are young. They'll also eat other fish foods like pellets and flakes. But when they're adults, they tend to develop a taste for the slime coats of other fish in the tank, leaving them open to infections, if the CAE doesn't kill them outright. These get to be around 10" long, and become nasty fish, so they shouldn't be kept in a community tank.

BTW, if your fish is a pleco, they can get from 5 to 18 inches, depending on the species. Only an otocinclus (oto) catfish stays small (around 1 1/2 inches). These like to be kept in schools, so if you only have the one, you might want to get him a few friends.

I have fish, my mother thought that catfish would slow the build up of algae in our tanks, (we ahve three at the moment, one for our gupies, one for our goldfish and another for our pregnant female gupies).
However this wasn't working. The goldfish is the dirtest fish we own, his (at least we think it is a boy) tank is the first to get really dirty only days after we cleaned it. Anyway the catfish didn't seem to work so i suggested a sucker fish, and she listened and bought one.
We cleaned the tanks recently and the goldfish's tanks was not slimey at all campared to the disgusting slimeyness of the gupies tank.

In conclusion a sucker fish will eat the algae in your tank, which if memory serves builds up to lack of motion. for reduce algae build up buy a sucker fish and improve water movement. If you want to give your sucker fish a long life put in a tank with a lot of other fish, then make sure they have places to hide because some fish might try and eat them.

Either may eat guppy fry. The other guppys are the most likely culprit, although I have seen plecos learn how to catch and eat small fish when they were really hungry. But I've also kept large well fed plecos in guppy tanks and still been over run with guppys. Provide more cover for the baby fish, plants like java moss or artifical plants, or seperate out the fry into a breeding net untill they are big enough to avoid being eaten Ian

Most sucker fish are bottom feeders and feed exclusively off of waste and algae. Contact your local pet store and inquire on what is the best food that can be purchase to feed. Some tanks don't make the algae to support feeders so sometimes you will have to purchase what is called "algae disc" they are basically nothing more than algae that sinks to the bottom and dissolves...
