We build swimming pools in East Central Florida. When we dig in certain spots along the Indian River, we hit sections of coquina, which is made up of little petrified shells all compressed together. Sometimes it is as hard as rock, not that we see much rock in Florida, lol.

What time period do these shells date from and does anyone know what they are called?

The Anastasia Coquina formation was laid down during the Pleistocene, and is composed of several different kinds of mollusk shells. The most prevalent is probably Donaxvariabilis, which is a kind of small clam.
