Honestly, with the majority of people voting for Bush in the last 2 decades do you really still believe in power to the people? LOL, just kidding. But it is something to think about. However, there is power in knowledge and from that we can have democracy. But if a system keeps it's people ignorant and stupid, then there will be no power to the people in this country. It's a great phrase by I think the people have proven that they don't want the power. They've become lazy, greedy and like children. Their media, their politicians and their corporations treat them like children by talking down to them, so they must like it. Maybe it makes them feel safe or something. I think you answer a very good question. But after much thought about it, I can't help feel that the power to the people has been wasted on the people themselves because they have taken it and their democracy forgranted. they gave it away to the highest corporate bidders.

Very unfortunate and very sad that US under Bush tremendously changed for the worth in all aspects including democracy and freedom. Nowadays there are more freedom and democracy in communist China and former USSR countries than in America. It is also sad that majority of American people do not realise this and still deep down in their heats believe that America is the #1 democracy in the world. If God forbids, Bush & Co. will start war with Iran and more likely they will than America and Americans will get a very loud wake up call, but it might be to late.

Technically we're a representaive democracy and a constitutional republic. The reason why you keep hearing these lemmings repeat "we're not a democracy, we're a republic" as a buzz word it to get the neocon agenda across. They know they can brainwash the more feeble-minded among into agreeing that we're no better than a third world "republics" like various South American countries. It's a way of making the slaves accept their enslavement. Except we're not selling our bananas, we're selling out ever devaluing jobs in service based work.

>Does it bother you when people call America a Democracy?

Yes, it does. It bothers me just as much as when people say 'nukyular'. America is NOT a democracy, it is a republic, and although the republic system of government is sometimes called a 'representative democracy', it is still quite a different thing from a true democracy and so the proper terms must be used.

Of course, about 95% of americans are not aware of this. There are a lot of other things they also aren't aware of, of course.

It bothers me that people on YA can neither spell nor use proper grammer. It bothers me that most young people that work a cash register cannot count your change back w/o the computer telling them how much they owe you. It bothers me that American Idol is more important to people than what their government is doing on a daily basis. So, yes, it bothers me that citizens of this country do not know the difference between a democracy and a democratic republic.

:-(

no, it's thrown around and has become a generic term. It is still inaccurate.
A TRUE democracy gives no rights to the minorities. Two wolves and one sheep voting on what's for supper. That is democracy in it's purest form. That's why the founding fathers established a Republic with laws protecting the minority.

No, not really, what bothers me is when the Democrats want to give millions, and millions, and millions, and millions of dollars in Welfare subsidies to illegal Mexican immigrants and for some, they come and work for a year, and then get Disability pay check completely undermining the system of checks and balances.

The Socialist programs are hurting the American Middle Class something terrible. It's going to have to stop.

It only bothers me when they call America a democracy and they know we aren't one.

No, because even though it is not technically a TRUE democracy, it is a democracy nonetheless. Just because we don't follow the letter of ancient Greek law doesn't make us any less a democracy. We are an American democracy.

America is a Representative Republic... It is a FORM of democracy. Why would that bother anyone?
