I have had clown loaches all my life. It is perfectly normal. I noticed they do it more if water conditions arn't perfect or if under stress. They even do it during mating.

Don't worry, they are fine, but I would have your water tested in case that is the cause.

They were likely just stressed when you happened to look. Just be sure to provide them with plenty of shelters (caves, plants, etc.) and you and your Loaches will be in good shape. You may want to increase the size of their shoal as well, they should be kept in groups of 5+ in tanks larger than 100 gallons (they reach about a foot long). Email me if you have any more questions.

when they are stressed or something scares them their stripes turn grey and if the turn black again really fast that means they are really healthy less prone to decease.
