It's been a gradual problem, but our washing machine will fill with water, rinse, empty the water; but after pulling clothes out, we'll notice soapy residue (or some small patches of bubbles... never more than 1 or 2 patches) still on the side of the tub.

We do not over fill the machine; in fact, I've tested it with only a t-shirt on a low load setting and it still happened.

Any ideas?
I would like to get the machine to run clean again.

(We purchased our home a few months ago and before that it sat vacant for a year. I am guessing the washer/dryer are from about 2001, since that's when the house was built.)

I'm not sure you tank is completely emptying or you still have water trapped somewhere. My old machine is doing that now too.

Do a load without clothes or detergent, but pour in vinegar, be generous, it's cheap. Vinegar naturally breaks down soap. See if that helps. Now if your next load of laundry smells like a salad, then you know the pump may be going out or there's a clog somewhere.

According to the book Hints from Heloise your washing machine should be cleaned of all the residue at least every 6 months or at least once a year. to do this let the machine fill for a full load, and add 1 half gallon of white vinegar to the water, and let it run through as if you are doing a wash, but don't add clothes. This definitely helps.

try pouring salt in the rinse water, it will get rid of the soap residue for you, l would use maybe half a cup / do you have a water softener ? if so, you only need to use a little soap, hope this helps

Use liquid soap such as Era. Read the container as to how much to use.

If you have hard water, the powdered soap does not dissolve well.

If you skin has been a little itchy, it is soap left in your clothing.
