Both are truly great. But Elton John's early stuff (with Bernie Taupin's songwriting) was extraordinary.

Billy Joel - feel he sustained a career charting hits for an extended period of time...Elton John was highly prolific in the 1970s, but became more of a pop culture personality and never was really able to recapture sustained momentum on the charts.
