My best friend had sex on Aug. 16, she is now having pain in her right abdomen and in her right ovary, could she be pregnant? She went to the hospital and got a CT scan, could this tell if she is pregnant, she also got her blood and her urine tested. She only had sex about 2 wks ago so is it 2 early for the CT scan to pick it up?

A CT scan would not be done to determine pregnancy. If she was pregnant then the blood test and the urine test should have been positive (regardless of whether she lied or not) for pregnancy if she conceived two weeks ago. And yes they would check for pregnancy because they have to rule it out before moving on to other possible causes of the pain. It sounds as though maybe they were concerned about a kidney stone if she had to drink the contrast?

A CT scan could not pick up a pregnancy because, umm, the baby at this point is just a few cells.
The last thing she would want to do is get a CT scan and be exposed to radiation that could potentially harm the baby.
CT scans are not used to detect pregnancy. A home pregnancy test can be used as early as 10 days after sex for some, but not pick it up for other's much later.

A doctor may recommend a CT scan to help:

* Diagnose muscle and bone disorders, such as bone tumors and fractures
* Pinpoint the location of a tumor, infection or blood clot
* Guide procedures such as surgery, biopsy and radiation
* Detect and monitor diseases such as cancer or heart disease
* Detect internal injuries and internal bleeding

Unlike MRI, CT scans can be done even if you have a pacemaker or an internal cardioverter defibrillator — devices implanted in your chest to help regulate your heartbeat. However, if you're pregnant or suspect you might be, tell your doctor. Your doctor may suggest postponing the procedure or choosing an alternative exam that doesn't involve radiation, such as an ultrasound or MRI. **

Considering the timing I doubt it's a pregnancy - it could a problem such as gallstones, kidney concerns, or ovarian cysts - None of which is life or death once diagnosed.

I also have the impression that your friend either didn't use protection or is worried about it's reliability, before she has intercourse again she might want to be sure she is truly prepared for any consequences (whew, sorry I had to say that you know...)

It's possible that she's experiencing some discomfort from having intercourse, but I doubt it would last 2 weeks...She should let her Dr know (in private I assume) that she had sex and when and he/she can talk to her about how to proceed.

I have been dealing w/ Endo since high school. After I had my son I had no had problems, however after I had my daughter the pain came back full force. It wasn't until 6 years ago that I was told by my doctor that I have Endometriosis. Since then I have under gone all sorts of tests, medications and then some trying to get relief from the pain. I can tell you that when I have a flair up I have alot of pain and cramping which then sets off the nausea and extreme tiredness. I can tell you that a C/t won't show if you have endo the only way it can be detected is through a lap (it's a surgery that they go your belly button and another small incision). I have never heard in all of the time that I have had this illness that it can cause developmental problems w/in babies. I do know that Endo can cause infertility. Good luck to you and your husband.

A CT scan has nothing to do with any of that, she needs to have an ultrasound. But if she is having pain in her right abdomen and right ovary she really needs to go to the doctors office asap, that sounds like an ectopic pregnancy, however if she just had sex Aug. 16th that still sounds a little early for her to have pain but you never know

A CT scan could actually harm the child because it is magnetic and taking pictures. this is why when you go in and get an x-ray they always ask females if there is any chance you could be pregnant, because if there is they don't want to do the x-rays then.

No, this couldn't tell if she was pregnant. So she should get a take pregnancy test or go to her dr. office and have one.

It all depends on what part of the body CT was performed. Be aware though, CT scan uses Xray and it is an advised procedure for a pregnant woman. At two weeks though, there is nothing visible, so NO, it won't show anything.

a ct scan is freaking dangerous thats exactly like going through an xray for 5 minutes, its very likely that baby would die or end up with 3 arms or something

go to a doctor surgery and take a test or a blood test

If she was pregnant she would not have had a CT that's just stupid. And no hospital would have giving a CT if the patient told them there a was a chance that she could be pregnant.

CT scan is not for pregnancy. She needs an ultrasound. I hope she told the doc she may be pregnant before the scan too.

Its too early for ultrasound too. Need to wait until her period is due.
