The egg carton shown in the picture looks like it is made of Styrofoam. Styrofoam should NOT be placed in soil. It will not rot for centuries.
I think I would proceed by starting with an egg carton made of pressed paper pulp. It is another common type of egg carton.
Additionally, I would cut apart the paper cup segments prior to planting the seeds and nest them in a tray of soil.
Plant the seeds and water them as normal, but also keep the soil in the tray moist.
When ready to plant the seedlings, they can easily be removed from the tray without disturbing the roots. The paper pulp cups will have a head start on rotting or disintegrating and you will have a better chance at success.

fiber egg catons are great for starting seeds, they are biodegradeable just like the peat pots you can buy. be carefull not to over water cause the carton will break up and you will end up with a mess. the photo though-those look like styrofoam egg cartons which will still work but you cant bury that into the ground cause it is not biodegradeable. but if you can use fiber- like cardboard cartons -after the seedlings are established you can just break them apart and bury the carton with plant in it, by doing that you reduce the shock to the roots by having to remove from the pot during transplating.

You can start your seeds in this type of carton, but you will have to dig them out. If you can get the cardboard like egg cartons, then you can plant these in the ground and not disturb the root system.

You can start them out that way, yet better not to transplant while still in carton cup......FISH 'EM OUT!
