I went there for vacation last year. It wasn't as great as I expected, but an ordinary vacation spot.

It's a comfortable, medium sized city, rather commercial and tourist oriented. The beaches are o.k., but have been eroded in the past few years. But you can drive to Hollywood Beach, which is not far and prettier.
It's not cheap to buy a house or apartment here, but rents can be reasonable. We have two seasons: hot, tropical summer from May to October, usuallly with a breeze, good for swimming, but muggy at night. And a warm spring/summer with fresh evenings and nights from Nov to April, when it's great to be outdoors but can be a little chilly for swimming in the ocean Dec. to March. Pools are fine, since they often heated.
It's really kind of a disjointed place. the main area for colleges and Universities is about 10 miles west of downtown in a suburb that isn't really so interesting.
There are a few pretty parts of town, like Las Olas and Riverfront, but lots of it is tacky strip malls and lots of franchises, but not really enough interesting restaurants.
There's enough to do, but it's a relaxed pace, and casual.
A lot of transient people. People are reasonably friendly, but it's a spread out place, so you don't always run into the same people all the time.
I came down here to get away from the cold of NYC. Lots of New Yorkers down here, as well as Canadians, European tourists, and other northerners. I like the weather but miss all the options of shops, restaurants, shows, etc. in NY.
It is much more comfortable here and I haven't been too cold even once in 12 years now.

I used to live in Ft Lauderdale. Beach is nice and if you are 21 or above there are plenty of clubs to go to.

Its pretty much like Miami. Its normal, just hot, but its pretty nice, it just depends on where you are. I like Downtown and near the Beach probably best. Its very big, and there is a lot of water. I used to live there, I'll probably move back soon. They have malls, beaches, and just about anything you are looking for.
