I don't understand your definition of "need"... I understand that "home-owners groups" will have requirements regarding landscaping, and that some cities will have ordinances requiring landscaping.

It would also required a definition of "weed": clover might be one man's lawn and another man's weed !!

There are areas such as my brother's ranch were you want to knock DOWN the weeds. For various reasons: for fire-safety, animal health (Star-Thistle will kill your horses), or to remove cover for pest-animals.

He has one "lawn"... a 12'x20' section of his backyard where he likes to sit in his hammock and read. The rest of the ranch is seasonal grass... once June arrives, there is no more rain until late September and irrigation is at a premium.

Though this last spring, we'd taken a few thousand pounds of composted horse manure, turned it and grass seed into about 8 acres of pasture and were rewarded with some VERY nice green pasture.

No.
If you let the weeds take over you will have good cover for rodents and unwanted insects. It is so much easier to control these pest in a grass area as to a weeded.

The reason they have that in-force is due to the allergies many people have.

However the bylaws change from one place to another. Where I live if you don't keep your lot free of weeds and keep it properly mowed the city will do it for you and send you the bill, they keep the city parks and parketts weed free and mowed as well for the same reason.

I don't think they have to. I don't fertilize my lawn, and other posers do around here using big name companies, and my lawn is just as green.

lawncare advertising creates the mindset that we have to have a "green, lush" lawn and of course it's all B.S. to get our money.

it just look better if the grass don't have any weeds, and if you have some weeds in your lawn or whatever they will eventually take over the grass that everyone wants
