Polaris is built with a rev limiter wired into the reverse. When you rev too high in reverse, it kicks in to limit the speed in reverse. This is due to the auto transmission. In other gear shift 4 wheelers, the gear ratio limits your reverse speed. On my 300 polaris 4x2, there is an override switch that will disconnect the rev limiter. I am not familiar with the 500, but your description sounds just like what mine does when I rev too high in reverse.

When the reverse gear's "transmission shaft" is engaged, it puts a little extra resistance against the engine.
Try adjusting the idle while in reverse.
