Most of the Waffen-SS officers were glorified thugs: members of Himmler's SS who displayed excellent Nazi party loyalty in offenses against Jews, Communists, labor union leaders and other opposition to the Nazis.

To a man they lacked formal military training, so "best Waffen-SS general" is nearly an oxymoron.

But the Waffen-SS troops WERE some of the most effective soldiers fielded by the Third Reich.

Some notable Waffen-SS officers included "Sepp" Dietrich, Paul Hausser, and Michael Wittmann.

The best of a poor lot is still poor. SS generals were not noteworthy for their military skills. The SS divisions fought well because they were at the head of the line for supplies, equipment and men.
