If you are hoping to have the generator ready for backup use keep Stabil in the fuel. Every month or so start the generator and load test to ensure everything is good. You don't want to have it in storage for a couple of years and find out there are problems when you need it.
If it's going into long term storage run the tank dry. Remove the spark plug out and put some oil in the cylinder. Put the plug back in and pull the engine over a few times.

Put in the correct amount of Stabil and make sure it gets mixed with the gas, run the engine making sure the gas with Stabil in it gets into the carb and then you should be fine for 6 mos. You can also empty the gas tank and run the engine intil she is out of gas, but Stabil works great.

stabil works great for storage. Just make sure you fill the tank with fresh gasoline, add the proper amount of stabil, I use a stick to stir the fuel/stabil to mix, then run the generator for 15 minutes to get the stabil into the fuel lines and carb or, shut off the fuel and run the generator until the cazrb and fule line is empty.

add stabil run few minutes cut gas off from tank to carb. then let run till it cuts off. if its long term storage remove spark plug add cap full oil reinsert plug an turn motor over few times.
that keeps oil in the cylinder to keep it from freezing up.put new plug in when ready to start again.

Run it dry. Stabbil is a great product but I have replaced many carbs over the years becuase they varnished during storage.
