It's basically when a company makes ads in such a sneaky/unique way that nobody is even sure they are advertising. Viral ads are usually very very vague and usually don't actually mention the product they are advertising: they just tease you so that you are interested in finding out more.
For instance, back when the Nintendo DS was being developed, several images were "leaked" to the Internet that gave vague details about a new product from Nintendo that could do a ton of amazing stuff. It turned out to be a viral marketing ad from Nint., but nobody knew that for sure until the DS was released and they confessed to it.

An online advertising approach that functions somewhat like word-of-mouth. The "viral" refers to how quickly it propagates, but its purpose is not to cause damage like a computer virus, but to make an offer available to the masses. The ad is disseminated via links in e-mail, blogs and Web sites that all point to some service or product people might want, whether free or paid.
Links on articles that say "send this to a friend" are another form of viral marketing. When the recipients receive the article, they are encouraged to sign up for the service.

It's kind of evil and insidious. It's trying to surreptitiously plant your marketing message into mainstream consciousness through word of mouth. Sometimes it involves planting people in social situations who are hired to talk up your product to others as though they were just regular people making friendly conversation.
I find it highly unethical and thoroughly appalling.
