I mean something major, like "Day after Tomorrow" or "Outbreak", bad. Do you think it would level the playing field and bring us all back together? Or do you think it would make the divide between rich and poor, majority and minority, religious and non-religious more pronounced?

It would be another blame game of who could of stopped it or who should of been there rather than taking action. Look at the aftermath of Katrina and then multiply it to the level you are looking for.
That is a large reason we are a target for terrorism. We will tear ourselves apart from the inside.

I think that you should look to Hurricane Katrina to how the country would react. While 9/11 was a high point of this nation the ability to act over a long period of time seems to be very hard. The US would react ,hopefully, as a united people but I would also look for a reaction such as we see in the TV Show "Jericho" I which people look to helping "home" before all others.

I don't see a lot general help being offered after a large disaster as shown in "Day after Tomorrow" Nuclear War or if the Planet and Nation was struck and devastated by a Asteroid or a Meteorite. The damage caused by such an act would be too extensive to cause a show of goodwill aid as the need to survive would be to great. I also see the well off and the government as doing what they did just before Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma, Nothing for the poor who would be left to fend for themselves.

Maybe I'm to cynical about this but I do think that the Human Race has a great ability to survive a great disaster no matter what.

Hello - where were you on 9-11 that was a major catastrophe, I would have hoped that would bring people together. And it did, so many reached out to help, now after all that togetherness everyone wants to blame Bush for what happened, go figure!

Historically, people tend to pull together in a crisis.
Today I wonder if that would be true. Too many insist the Government do everything for them. Then they just sit on their hands and do nothing while those next to them suffer. Then they falsely accuse the GOVERNMENT of not caring. Katrina is an example of that type of irresponsibility on the part of individuals.
I want to keep my faith in the human race, so if there IS a major disaster, please don't let me down.
We MUST remember that the government can not take care of everything. We MUST be SELF-sufficient.
Then, if we are self-sufficient and capable, we can help our neighbors when life calls upon us to do so.

We have the most generous hearts in the world, we came together with relief for the tsunami victims, 911 families and Katrina. We gave money, supplies and some were able to physically help.
