I think that there's probably a genetic factor which expresses itself as a tendency toward determination to achieve. However, I also believe that these traits are greatly influenced (amplified) by parenting, social interaction, education, and environmental factors.

An example of genetic tendency toward hard work and success can be found in Albert Einstein and Isacc Newton. Both were believed to have suffered from a mild form of autism called Asperger's Syndrome, AS. Newton more than Einstein. One of the effects of this disease is that victims tend to be able to focus completely on one or two subject matters over long periods of time while totally tuning out the distractions of the rest of the world. This may have been one of the mechanisms which permitted Einstein and Newton the ability to push ideas and experiments beyond that of other "more normal" scientists. I am sure however that up-bringing, social conditioning, and education played an equal part in their great achievements.

For Tricia3 and Kapiche!

You can take a business manager and probably make a scientist out of him, just not a very good one. Just like you could take Einstein and turn him into a factory worker, just not a very good one. The reason for that is something called movitation and temperament style; both have strong genetic based tendencies. A scientists is a researcher primarly because of temperament type, (typically INTJ), at least the good ones are. This temperament style cannot be taught. It is either there or it isn't.

No! Any normal human has the ability to work hard or be determined, what you choose to do with it is behavioral. Senior year I had no problem getting to a ski slope before or at 7 am. However getting to class at 7:45 am was difficult due to lack of interest. That is not genetic.

I don't think so.
in my opinion you learn to be hardworking and determined, with a good mixture of a positive mind and support from those around you, you can be hardworking and determined no matter how low in a position you are in.

think about albert einstein. i know he was an absolute gun but he still couldn't talk when he was 3 and his parents took him to doctors thinking he was mentally disabled in some way. but it all payed off for his determination in his later years right?

it probably mostly depends on your environment, your surroundings. even if genetics were a cause for hard work and determination, it is certain that some people throw it away and focus on bad things or their surroundings and peers influence them in a different way, so that they slack and aren't determined. i agree. nature vs. nurture

They are generally learned behaviours more than genetic ones. I learned to how to work hard from my dad but it was still my choice as to whether I applied what I learned.

All things in humans have a genetic component. It is nature via nurture. Traits, such as you mention, are partly heritable. What you do with what you are given forms your character.
