You could keep it in a tank for a short while, but eventually it will need to go back to the pond - koi get to be three feet or more.

As to the tank size, it should have at least enough room to turn around in the shortest measurement of the tank (usually the width front to back). For now, that should be at least a 30-55 gallon tank. Remember that koi produce a lot of wastes, so get a slightly larger sized filter than your tank would otherwise need. And if you don't already have a tank with fish in it, there will be a lot of ammonia and nitrite (both of which are toxic to fish) in the tank for the first 1 1/2-2 months. Please read this on cycling before deciding to keep your koi in a tank: http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm and these on ammonia and nitrite poisoning: http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/disease/p/ammoniapoison.htm , http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/disease/p/nitritepoison.htm

You can use tapwater for them, just be sure to use a conditioner to remove any chlorine/chloramine from the water first: http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/chlor.htm

Do you mean snails rather than "sails"? You could, but depending on the type you have, they may multiply rather rapidly!

Keep in mind that your koi is going to grow to be much bigger than 5 inches. If you can find a tank that can replicate exactly the amount of water, quality of water, and temperature of the outside pond, your koi will probably be just as happy in that tank. However, a tank as big as your pond would probably be a nuisance if brought indoors.

currently i have my koi in a tank. but that is due to my own ignoreance.

when i bought her she was maybe a inch or two from walmart, and i honestly didnt know she was a "koi" but just a goldfish.

i've had her going on 4 years now, and she is one of my favorite pets. she is well over 7 or 8 inches and in a 20g tank. i will be upgrading her. but seeing as i living in an apt, i cant have a pond. so she may be tank bound forever. BUT if i had a pond, i surely wouldnt move her from it. i would definatly make sure she is guarded from the elements and wildlife!

Koi get to be 2-3 feet! Why can't you enjoy him in the pond? He is a living creature, not just a display item. If you get like a 300 gallon tank that is long but wide enough for him to turn, it may be possible.

Personally, I think the Koi should stay in the pond- it is bigger and more of a natural habitat for him. You are risking him dying by putting him into a tank.

they cant use tap water . and they like pond plants. and they are pond fish. you would probally need a 100 gallon tank cause they are pond fish. and you cant use a filter. or a heater. they are best outside cause they have right temperature. i would keep the pond
