My heart goes out to each of you!
Having been a "survivor" of Hurricane Katrina, I was wondering if the government of Britian was doing a better job of helping those affected than ours:
A few stats on what has happened with all of the money sent to the survirors of Katrina, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Fed govmt allocated $23.5 BILLION to MS. That is enough to buy average size houses for each of the 65,000 people who lost their homes, $ enough left over to buy a brand new Honda accord to split between their two houses aver. $166,000. And by the way it is stated that is not the base model Accord, but the EX version. In addition, it's enough to give each man, woman and child in the three Southernmost counties $68,500 apiece.
However, 2 years latter the residents who survived this disaster still are waiting for grants and had it not been for volunteers would still be living in tents.
I was wondering how your government has helped/ or not helped the flooding survivors?

No, I am generally NOT ONE to ask for handouts..however, when the Ins. Co. does not pay, and it has been documented by insiders that they are changing what the adjustors have said so that they do not have to cover the loss (huge class action law suit against them), and I worry more about the elderly, who have died as a result of lack of hope and anything to look forward to, and there have been many, Really difficult for someone who is 80 years old to think that things can ever get back to normal when they don't have enough money to cover their medical expenses b/c they were raised in an era when Social Security was "suppose" to protect you. And, to answer your question, I have had brain surgery, 2 concussions, a bevy of Neurological problems, and 100% disabled, with a son (who is 8) and has been uprooted b/c of this storm 5 times in 4 years. So, please be careful of who you judge, difficult to walk in anothers shoes, but for that person who was so rude, may you walk in mine SOON!

Thank you for your concern, nice to see on here. I live in Sheffield, which was badly hit by the floods. Thankfully the fatality rate was extremely low, even though the damage caused to Sheffield alone will cost millions.

Everyone is just trying to get back to normality, which has been hard for some people, not only in this city but across the country, as their homes, personal belongings and place of work have been lost in the floods.

I think the government could have done so much more but there is nothing new there and i find it upsetting that your government would let its own citizens live in a tent after everything that they had to deal with.

Well my heart goes out to you too, for getting through Katrina!

Approx 37,000 homes were affected here and the government refused the European aid that we qualified for.

There was also a huge impact on wildlife (where do the wild animals & field nesting chicks go? answer- they drown).

So, all pants really. The areas hit seemed to be home counties & southern flatlands mostly. The papers have got over it & moved on to youth crime which dominates our front pages now, but the people affected are obviously still trying to get sorted.

While I feel bad that you lost your home, why do you feel the government owes you a car and a house? Did you not have insurance? I don't see the people in the Midwest looking for handouts. Are you able to work? If your car was insured, move to another area and find a job. I am guessing you have been helped enough to start over. Do it.

Thank you for your concern. Things are getting back to normal now, but the government could have asked the European Union for help ,but never. We seem to dish out aid to everyone else but when it comes to our own people we are sadly lacking. I wish you well.

It wasn't that bad. Don't panic. I have to say something. This planet that we live on is alive. It could wipe us out of existence when it feels like it. We as a race think we own this planet but it owns us as it frequently reminds us when it let's off some steam. If we keep trying to destroy it and treating it with utter contempt it will show us who is boss. I have no problem with this planet, my home showing me that it is still alive and well. If you are still alive after a natural occurence that is created by the planet that gives you life, then you should think yourself lucky and stop whinging about petty materialistic objects that you used to own. If we keep treating this planet with the same disregard as you would treat the air that you breath, then one day our childrens children won't exist. If you are not part of the solution you're part fo the problem.

we're muddling through in the best British tradition - in fact, we'd like nothing better than to sweep it all under the carpet....if only we could find a dry one.
