I travelled to Philadephia recently, and noticed that it was nearly impossible to find alcohol. What's up with that? I had to drive over to NJ to find a liquor store. I'm from Toronto, Canada and I'm used to having beer stores and liquor stores everywhere.

Liquor sales in PA are conducted through state-run stores called "Wine and Spirits" or "State Liquor stores"

It's a state-run monopoly, so since liquor stores aren't in competition they aren't on almost every corner like in some cities.

Here's google maps result for where you can get booze in philly: http://maps.google.com/maps?rls=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&q=liquor&near=Philadelphia,+PA&fb=1&view=text&sa=X&oi=local_group&resnum=1&ct=more-results&cd=2

A lot of people just drive over to NJ or DE. It's much cheaper and less of a hassle. BTW you have to buy them in Philly at a Wine and Spirits store. They are all over the place. And you can get beer from a distributor by the case.

Pennsylvania's liquor stores are run by the state, so you have to look for a "State Store" for liquor and a "Beer Distributor" for Beer. You can't buy liquor or beer at the grocery store, gas stations or convenience stores and you can't buy any alcohol on Sundays.

Welcome to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and its ridiculously antiquated liquor laws. f you want beer, bars and some restaurants sell 6 packs. For cases, you'll need to go to a beer distributor. Liquor is controlled by a state monopoly of "State Liquor Stores", often located beside grocery stores, but not always. There was talk about putting liquor stores inside grocery stores in PA but I don't think anything has come of it. Here's hoping we enter the 21st Century soon.

Spirits and Wine have to be bought in Pennsylvania, at a state store, which the state calls "Wine and Sprits Shoppe". Beer has to be bought through a distributor, where you can only buy it by a case. You can sometimes also find beer at a deli. You actually did what most people in Philly do, drive to NJ where it's less hassle.

Ugh, buying alcohol is a pain in Pennsylvania. The state runs these lame "Wine and Spirits" stores. Don't expect to find any good wines there. Then they sell beer at these nasty, garage-like beer distributor places. Don't plan on buying alcohol on Sundays there either.

I lived in Bucks County and always crossed the river to Lambertville or Stockton NJ to buy alcohol.

There are State run liquor stores. Some are rather small and have a limited selection. Others called Wine & Spirit Premium Shoppes have a better selection.
