Typically you know by the way you connected it to the Internet.
For example if you pay your Cable company for Internet access, if you pay an ISP for Internet access, or you pay a DSL company for Internet access.

Pretty straight forward,
If you are connected to a phone direct into your computer you are on a dial up connection.
If you have a phone wire that goes into an External Modem and you have filters on your unused or used other phone connections you are on DSL.
If you are connected through any of the cableTV providers you are on CABLE.
These are the main 3 for users. There are others available but they are more expensive and normally in a corperate enviorment.
