A lot of players are products of good college systems, and just can't transition to pro style or speed. That's why option QBs and run and shoot QBs often suck at the pro level.

Ron Dayne had a HUGE o-line in Wisconsin, and could run over a lot of college level linebackers. No team is going to have a line that overpowers it's opponents like Wisconsin did, and pro LBs are so much stronger and faster that he's not going to run many of them over.

Troy Smith is a great leader, but if you watched him in college, he often held the ball WAY too long, and ran a ton of screen passes, swing passes, and curl routes where he did not need to lead receivers. When he had to lead receivers, his accuracy dropped dramatically. Tressel molded the offense around his skills. Plus he simply did not have the prototypical size NFL teams are looking for, which really hurt him in the draft.

NFL teams often recruit players for potential, not performance. Sometimes players have not peaked in college, and still have a lot of room to grow and improve. That's why many of the top picks in the draft are guys you've heard little about in the college football season. Plus a lot of the players you have heard of simply have little room to get better, so if their not dominating college players at record levels, they won't be successful in the NFL.

Well NFL teams has certain standards in what they want in there players. Some felt Jason white wasnt accurate, Ron dayne was outplayed by Tiki, and Alot felt troy smith wasnt as good as Russell or Quinn.

Another factor is some of these college players maybe arent mentally tough for the NFL. Some cant adapted to playing against the BEST at all time. Also some players are products of systems. When they play in a certain system for 3 or 4 years. They simply can't make the transition to another one.

THe talen tlvl in college is significantly lower than in teh NFL. Its the same as how the Star QB on your HS team prob never played in college. There are more High Schools than colleges so they start to weed players out. The same happens to college players going into the NFL. Even if they are dubbed the next best thing, they may have only had the stats do to playing weaker teams.

The other thing could be getting drafted to a bad situation, a la David Carr.Getting drafted 1st overall by an expansion basically guaranteed him to fail.

In terms of players such as Troy SMith not getting drafted first round, he wasnt a need for many teams, as they valued either other quaterbacks or other positions higher than smith. Not every team needs a QB outta the draft adn if the two-three teams that do dont like the guy for their system they wont take him.

Well college, the talent level is lower, so the good players turn out to be incredible. In the NFL, those same players have the ability to compete, but I think what it is, is that a lot of them just can't compensate for the NFL. Take Reggie Bush for example. He's going to be a good weapon in the NFL for a while, but just looking at last year. He destroyed all defenses in college, didn't much matter who it was, and his rushing average was upwards to 7 yards per carry right? Well he tried the same kinds of moves and jukes in the NFL and failed to even get 4 yards per carry. If he doesn't change his running style, he'll be just another running back...but he has the talent to be much more.

in college there is normally 4or 5 good players on a team so being a star isn't that great when almost everyone in the nfl was a star on their college team
