someone once told me he craves attention. If I push him down then pet him, he is taking that for more attention, so he keeps jumping on me.

He jumps up. I grab his paws and push him down.

Dogs jump up because it gets them closer to the people they love and gets them attention. An effective way of dealing with this is to cross your arms in front of your chest and stare up at the ceiling or sky. The idea is to completely ignore your dog and not engage him in any way. Don't even speak to him while he's jumping on you. Once he's down on all fours and not trying to jump, lavish him with attention, but if he jumps on you again, go back to standing up straight and staring at the ceiling or sky. If everyone in your household does this consistently, your dog should learn that staying on all fours gets him what he wants (attention) while jumping gets him what he doesn't want (being ignored).

Another thing you can do is teach your dog commands like "sit" and "down". All his lessons should be given when he's calm, but once he's thoroughly mastered the commands, you'll be able to use them when he's excited and jumping. Do be sure to reward him when he sits or lies down on command. Dogs learn MUCH better when they're rewarded for doing the right thing instead of punished for doing the wrong thing.

Make sure your dog gets plenty of positive attention (being petted and talked to) when he's on all fours and behaving himself. He needs to know that he can get the attention and closeness all dogs crave.

By the way, the techniques described above work on all dogs, not just pits.
