Miss MacGillicutty carefully unpacked the picnic basket, secure in the knowledge that if Yogi Bear showed up, the Marshal would chase him away. She cast another glance at the man himself, he looked so preoccupied, not his usual quiet self, this was deep.
When he spoke, his words made her freeze in place.
*"Did I Ever Open Up My Heart And Let You Look Inside, Sunshine?" he asked her wistfully. "*I Know I Was A Crazy Fool, still am, all these years."
"Oh Matt," Sunshine breathed, "*You've Only Got My Heart On A String And Everything A' Flutter. That last posse you lead, well, *Ever Since You Went Away I've Had This Sentimental Inclination. *So Why Don't You Come right Out and Say It, Stupid?"
Marshall Matt smiled ar her teasing, as he wondered how he could face a desperate crook without flinching, but Sunshine always made him nervous.
"Aww shucks Sunshine, you know what I'm saying." he grinned at her. "To me, you're a *Golden Earth Girl, Sings to the Wind. No matter how low I am feeling, *On The Darkest of Nights We Were Two of a Kind."
Sunshine put down the fried chicken she had in her hands, sidling over to rest her head on the Marshal's brawny shoulders.
"Sometimes Matt, I think you have a need, you must *Live a Little, Be a Gypsy, Get Around. You aren't ready to settle down in one place for long. But it's okay, I can be patient when I want to be. You see, I always *Touch Your Lips With a Magic Kiss, so I know you'll come back every time."
Matt looked her deep in the eyes. His face was so serious, yet there was something in his gaze that didn't frighten her, it made her..tremble.
When he finally spoke, she was so full of emotion she thought she might actually swoon.
"Miss Sunshine MacGillicutty, will you do me the honor of being my beloved wife for however much time we have together?"
Well, ya ask any of the townfolk about that time. They will surely say that their famous Marshal and his soon to be bride, well, *They Laughed A Lot That Summer, lah de dah for sure. And ya know what else? The whole of Dodge City laughed right along with 'em. That was a good time, yessir, it was a real good time in Dodge.

NOBODY BUT NOBODY writes a love story about Sunshine Mac Gillicutty and Marshall Matt Dillon like Annie can....but I will give this a shot!
Sunshine and Matt were having one of those few and far between, off beat days. It seemed they couldn't get along for anything...Matt went back to town and Sunshine was cleaning out the barn, going ninety-to nothing. She was trying to get Matt off her mind....of course it didn't help.
She kept thinking back to their conversation earlier that morning. Matt was groaping around, having a miserable day, when Sunshine finally said;" Matt you've got to talk to me!"
Matt finally said "Sunshine, 3.) ever since you went away I've had this sentimental inclination. I just can't get on past this feeling. 1.) You've only got my heart on a string and everything a'flutter. I haven't ever felt this strongly about a woman, in my whole entire life, and I am afraid...well, I'm afraid next time we might not get back together".
Sunshine looked into his eyes, and said; "Matt, what are you trying to say!? 2.) Did I ever open up my heart and let you look inside? So, why don't you come right out and say it?"
At that point, Marshall Matt Dillon was completely speechless. Although it appeared he was angry, he just didn't know how to explain it to her. So, he chose to go back to town and find the right words, before he just let this whole situation get out of hand.
I'll be back later Sunshine, he went out, got on his horse and rode towards town.
Sunshine was just dumb founded. She stood there several minutes, until Matt was out of sight.
And Matt's at the Long branch talking to his friend Doc, and having a drink.
Doc "Now Matt, we've been friends many years. I know you love Sunshine. I don't understand this insecurity you are feeling about your relationship"
Matt. " I don't know Doc. Sunshine is my 7.) Golden Earth Girl, sings to the wind." Sunshine is the best thing that has ever happened to me.6.) I know I was a crazy fool, when i walked out this morning!" I didn't know what to do ,so I left.
Doc" Well it's probably a good thing you left, if you were feeling that way."
Matt 4.) "On the darkest of nights we were two of a kind."
Sunshine, is my everything! I just don't want to lose her, Doc!"
Doc "Well, listen to what you are saying." If I were you Matt, I'd high tail it back home. Live a little be a gypsy, get around, and take Sunshine with you!
Sunshine is dressed to kill. She has cooked Matt's favorite meal ever, baked a pie, and trying to keep busy until he get's home. She didn't want to look anxious...ya know.
Sunshine's heart skipped a beat when she heard Matt ride up on his horse. She could hardly hold herself back.
Matt took his horse and put it in the barn. He kept looking towards the house, waiting to see if Sunshine was coming outside.
Finally he walked towards the house, still no Sunshine.
He slowly walked into the house. He could smell the fantastic aroma coming from the kitchen. He took a step or two towards the kitchen, not knowing if Sunshine was angry, hurt, indifferent.
Suddenly she appeared. She was beautiful. She gave him one of those Sunshine smiles, that Annie writes about.
Tears welled up in Matt's eyes. Matt finally attempted to speak, but Sunshine interrupted him.
Sunshine sprang up into his arms and said; "I'm gonna 5.)touch your lips with a magic kiss!"
I guess she did.....Only Annie knows what would happen next...YEA HAW!!

( Let me spin you a little yarn about a gunslinger I am familiar with......that's right...it's Irving. The 142nd fastest gun in the west)
Now Irving was never much in the love department. He fancied himself a loner. A traveller of the open road. A man too set in his own ways to be tied down by the wants and desires of a woman. But, like every man, he had his story. There WAS this one time....
Due to a series of embarassing accidents far too long to be recounted here, Irving had to ride into Dodge City bareback. On a mule. He did so flaunting as much dignity as he could muster.
He rode by the banker, John Tilly, who was striding home purposefully, a long day already in the books. He rode by Tennessee Porter, the city drunk, who was already two sheets to the wind as he cradled a bottle in Wickman's alley. And he rode by the marshall, Matt Dillon himself, who was sitting on the front rail of the city jail talking amiably with his Sunshine.
That's when he came upon her. She was standing off to the side of the road, just in front of Broley's market. Bronzed skin, long legged, deep set blue eyes, she just about knocked him spang off of that mule. Irving pulled his "mount" to a halt and swung off it's back.
"Howdy ma'am," he said, his mouth running off before his mind could catch up. "You've only got my heart on a string and everything a flutter."
The woman cast a curious gaze over him. "Irving Pumpernickel is that you?!" she asked. "My God it is. It's Dixie Hill! Our moms did time together in Brook Creek prison, and we met at visitation! Remember?"
And it all came flooding back to him. The way he stared at her even back then. They had shared a brief kiss those many years ago, and it was an experience that still danced at the edge of his mind during those lonely nights on the trail. Dixie Hill! Her shimmering beauty, her lustful gaze. The golden earth girl who sings to the wind of his his heart. It was a small world after all.
"Indeed I do remember you, Dixie. You stole my heart those many years ago and ever since you went away, I had this sentimental inclination."
"Why Irving Pumpernickel. You certainly do have a way with words."
"And you have a way with me. May I escort you to Feeney's so that we can get some tea?"
"That would be very nice."
Oh how he had missed her without even knowing he had. The way her hips would sway with her walk. The way her head would tilt. The way her full lips would glisten in the evening sun.
The memories of her those years ago surfaced in bunches as they walked along. They awoke within him a yearning that years on the dusty trail had suppressed. He felt like he wanted to cry.
You missed her, he thought. So why don't you come right out and say it, stupid? Because I never had luck with women, that's why. So he was content to walk along beside her.
They arrived at Feeney's and many a head turned at their arrival. She, the bronze Goddess, and he, reputation having proceeded him yet again, the one hundred and forty second fastest gun in the west.
"Dixie," he began when they reached their table. He had decided to risk it all and lay himself bare. "Did I ever open up my heart and let you look inside?"
"No Irving. As I recall, through the better part of our earlier relationship you were rather quiet and sometimes even stoic."
"Well I had to be, Dixie dear. It is widely known that you are the one hundred and thirty fifth fastest gun in the west, so out of deference to that fact, I let you make all the moves. But I don't think I'm content to do that any longer. Back then, on the darkest of nights we were two of a kind."
"Why Irving....are you saying what I think you're saying?"
"Indeed Dixie. I know I was a crazy fool to let you go all those years ago, but I was always too afraid to say what I felt. I loved you then, and I love you now."
"Oh Irving. You're so sweet. But I'm not Dixie Hill anymore. I'm Dixie Zielekowski. I married Heinrich Zielekowski. You remember him, don't you?"
"The pollack?"
"GERMAN- pollack, Irving. His mother was from Berlin."
Irving was devastated. Knowing his track record with love, this had quite possibly been his last chance at finding a soul mate. And the emotions she stirred in him.
"At least let me touch your lips with a magic kiss before I depart," he said, his voice quivering.
"Come now Irving. Do not make this more difficult than it need be.."
And he ran. Howling like a mad man, he stormed out of Feeney's, ran down main street in Dodge City, hopped atop his mule, and took off for the west. The denizens of Dodge City ever remembered the spectacle. A wiry gunslinger covered in pink denim, charging out of town while riding bare backed on a mule, and crying like a man who lost his sidearm.
"That's one sad fellow," Matt Dillon said from his perch on the wooden porch.
"No. That's just Irving," Sunshine said, putting her head on his shoulder.
"The one hundred and forty second fastest gun in the west."
