They don't require it, but they can live in salinity greater than that found in the ocean. I currently have a trio (and numerous fry) living in full saltwater to be used for cycling small reef tanks.
Although they don't have to have the saltwater, I've found they are hardier if you do add some salt to their tanks. A tablespoon per 5 gallons is enough, but since they can live from fresh to full saltwater, the exact amount you use isn't so critical, and you can either use aquarium salt, or a marine salt mix (some breeders I know use a teaspoon to a tablespoon per gallon for their fish, which may be easier to calculate when it comes time for water changes). The only time the amount or type of salt may make a difference is if they have other species as tankmates.

Nope. They are fresh water. If you wanted to make the water healthy for them, you might want to check with your nearest fish store and ask them if they have any products for that. If you don't have the cash, regular tap water always works fine.
