The hymen in humans is a thin membrane that stretches partway across the opening of the vagina. It is usually a crescent shape or circular around the edge of the opening, and, when intact is taken as a sign that the girl or woman is a virgin, but it is stretchy so its not always a reliable indicator.
In prepubescent young girls it is very thin, and almost translucent, but in puberty it thickens and changes color due to hormonal influence.

It is elastic, but in very rare cases can be torn or broken by accident, in sports, using a tampon incorrectly, but usually through deliberate penetration; penetrative sex, rape, or self penetration with fingers or objects.
It can be sensitive, so when torn or over stretched it hurts, and may bleed a bit. but only 43% of women report bleeding the first time they had sex.

Besides humans, these are the only animals known to have hymens; Bats, Cats, Chimpanzees, Dogs, Elephants, Llamas, Galago (Bush babies), Guinea pigs, Horses, Lemurs, Manatees, Moles, Rats, Seals, Toothed whales
