This is his 1st shoplifting offense, but he has a previous MIP (Minor in Possession) back in the west coast. He just turned 18 and is about to start college. Should he get a lawyer? Will his previous MIP affect the outcome?

He did the crime now make him pay for it. He must learn and yes he is 18 and now he will have it on his record.
Obviously stealing from a person that is paying for college shows a mental problem .....take him to a therapist.

it seems to me that his options are whatever the police tell him his options are. a lawyer for shoplifting? i'd just plead guilty and try to get some kind of community service or educational sentence (like you have to go to a class to find out why shoplifting is bad).

A lawyer could probably get it reduced to almost nothing, or discharged depending upon how sneaky he is. Having a criminal history for your entire life is pretty stupid.

He should pay the fine do the time and keep his hands in his pockets.Juvinile records are sealed.They won't even see it.A lawyer will cost more than the fines in this case
