Mums are slowing down now, not growing unless you live south of the Equator or artifically stimulate the plant with longer day light hours. Mums are quite photosenstive.

Ideally they should be in the ground for winter and allowed to go dormant. If you must keep them in a pot, they still have to undergo a winter dormancy. This is done by the naturally longer nights, cooler temps and withholding moisture gradually and then totally. How long a "drought" will be determined by the pot size and plant size. I can't give you an exact time. After the drought you can start watering (think of spring rains...) and when the plant starts showing new growth, knock it out of the pot, divide the plant and replant...let's say divide in half or quarter so you now have 2 or 4 plants. Then grow the plant on thru the year.

I'd think so. Only don't go too big--the roots could suffer root rot from the amount of wet soild when you water--especially if it doesn't have much vermiculite or breathability.

they probably won't this year but if you plant them in your yard they will come back next year and will be bigger, and after three years you can divide them so you will have more
