I agree with cheek of it all.
Pacino's list of characters is wide ranged
From Tony Montana in Scarface/ Michael Corleone in the Godfather to Johnny in Frankie & Johnny/ Lt.Col. Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman.
His range of characters no bounds.

I think both are superb actors, but De Niro just has the edge for me overall. With "Raging Bull", De Niro pushed the boat out just about as far as any actor ever has. He had to get fit, learn boxing and then do a crash weight gain all the while terrifying everyone with his rages. A towering performance for which he deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
De Niro has faded badly in recent years. Pacino still has some of his old fire left in him, but De Niro's highs are just slightly higher than Al's in the final analysis.

Both coming from the method school and being acolytes of the great Marlon Brando, it is hard separating them.
Both are outstanding, in terms of physical preparation you would say De Niro hands down. In terms of acting it's hard to say, the prime example being "HEAT".
A great movie wih top performances from both.
Of them both I prefer De Niro, Raging Bull, Mean Streets, Once Upon a Time in America, Taxi Driver are a few of his amazing movies.
So over the piece De Niro

al pacino everytime, i adored him in the godfather trilogy . his daughter is shot at the end of part three, after she has died in his arms, his emotion was electric, the silent scream he did was so gut-wrenching (especially if you are a parent and have known grief) ending with the most heart-breaking scream- that was acting of the highest order!!! i also loved him in 'the scent of a woman' especially the 'tango' scene, other favs are 'dog day afternoon', serpico, devils advocate and scarface, what a man!!!!!!

De Nero for sure. The part in the deer hunter when he, and Christoper Wakin were playing Russian roulette was unforgettable.

I named myself after him. It is Al Pacino all the way.
Ask yourself who has the lifetime achievement award.

I think they're both pretty good, but pacino has had a lot better gigs...let's see deniro pull off pacino's part in "scent of a woman"...let's see him pull of "scarface", or "the devil's advocate"..
my vote is pacino
