Half of all US marriages end in divorce. Every day you hear about husbands cheating on their wives and vice versa.

In many traditional cultures, adultry is strictly forbidden but men are allowed to have more than one wife. There are rules, too. For example, men are required to take care of each wife. They can only have the number of wives that they can afford. There are also rules for women, too.

I've been also watching the the HBO show Big Love, too, and wondering could polygamy work in the US? It wouldn't be a requirement. Only those who want to can follow it.

What do you all think?

Part of the reason I asked this question was because there is a growing number of women who are not married. Perhaps if people (mainly men) had the opportunity to marry then more women would have a man, they could have their kids with a father and people. This system makes more sense to me than the system we currently have.

Very doubtful....it is difficult taking care of one wife...but if polygamy were to become legal...I think women should be able to have more than one husband as well.

Plural marriage as it's also called has worked in this country, it's just that those in charge didn't like the idea so they railroaded laws through to outlaw it.

Read about the history of the Mormon Church and how they practiced poligamy and why they practiced it.

There is also a splinter group of poligamists near the Utah/Arizona border that practice it.

But here is where it makes it a question for scholars of the law.

They are only married to one woman and the other "wives" are common law and not married by clergy or justice of the peace.

As the family grows they add on to their houses rather than move and buy larger ones.

It's better than serial monogamy. I for one would LOVE to have a 'sister-wife' in the house. My husband and I aren't legally married for this very reason.
It takes strong personalities to work it out though, I would not stay with a guy who brought people home and said 'deal with it'.

No... my husband can't handle me. I'm too much for him. Most men can barely tolerate one wife, let alone two. That's a heck of a lot of Viagra!

Polygyny (more than two wives) would be impossible for most men.

Polyandry (women with more than one husband) is the stuff of fantasies until one realizes that husbands can get incredibly annoying. I could see it now, all the men on the couch watching football on Monday night making a heck of a lot of noise. No thank you.

i wouldn't want my hubby to have another wife. but we like to spice up our life. keep things interesting. we include other people in our sex life from time to time but we're very open about it and so are our friends. it works for us but it wouldn't work for most people. but when we bring another girl or guy or couple into the bedroom we both know that it's just sex and we don't care for them the way we care for each other. if i thought he cared for them the way he cares for me it would be a problem.
