The Constitution. It's part of the President's oath of office.
If a president's decision is not in accordance with the constitution, we have courts set up to adjudicate that.

i don't see it as patriotic to defend our presidents decisions. structurally there is something very wrong in that he has complete immunity / does not make decisions that support what the people in America want. I really don't know how he falls asleep at night . It's no wonder he needs Halcyon. what good / value does being patriotic bring ? doesn't put extra money in our bank accounts for old age or help the families of soldiers that are doing to die in Iraq.
constitution is more important , but i don't see how defending it would be patriotic. the document protects us from government , police and provides guidelines for living in an organized society.
How do you see being patriotic ?

The oath I took unpon enlisting in the USMC stated: "I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."
Of the three parts of the soldier's oath, obedience to the President is third, placing it in the lowest priority in my mind. Also, we were taught to obey "lawful orders" and the constitution is already deemed "lawful" and must be protected, even AGAINST the President!

Depends. It it's a Democratic president, the Bushies will say the Constitution. If it's an untouchable neocon president that the media tells them to respect in a "time of war," then it's the whatever the President wants.
