I'm not a pedophile or pervert!
BUT,... (lol, not usually a good start ) haha

When did Sex get so taboo in general?

when did it go from happening in public to being hidden.

Why are children so sheltered from hearing about it,

because they might engage in sex acts? Is that why? Don't kids play doctor and stuff anyway?

Just curious as to why, not condoning!

actually I oppose public sex, pedophila, and would shelter my kids from it too!

I was just curious after seeing a porn icon on yahoo answers, and people yelling about children being on here

why are children on here anyway? lol

I have the feeling I'm going to regret asking this..

Sex and the history of the understanding of sex is so misunderstood, I almost feel I shouldn't start.
First of all, there is nothing inherently wrong with sex and sexual behavior obviously, since without it we would not be here. But people need to know that sex is not something to play with. There are serious psychological and sociological aspects of sexual behavior that should not be taken lightly, which is why children can know about sex, but they should not be engaging in adult sexual behavior. They are not old enough to comprehend or manage the consequences (emotional, psychological, sociological, etc,).
Because society has developed to require a long training period for its children (but our physiology has not progress in the same way), contrary to our primitive roots, society developed into family relationships such that men become committed to staying with one or more women. Unfortunately, many of those societal bonds have become weaker in the last century for many reasons. Still, the best training for children occurs when they have both a father and a mother.
Sexual prohibitions have their roots in the practice of ritual licentiousness practiced by early religions based on what are now considered myths. Many religions practiced ritual sexual freedom for a period during the year, usually around the winter solstice. Many modern religions developed their prohibitions regarding sex because the other religions at the time used sexual licentiousness as a form of deity worship. Therefore, sexual licentiousness was seen as allegiance to another god or gods rather than to what they considered the true god.
I don't think I have done this topic complete justice, but it is a start.

I had just read a book that mentioned how the earlier church had taken all the freedom out of sex and made it so wicked, and shameful. It was one way to make others feel guilty and bring them to church to confess, basically bringing in more people for the congregations.
And it has stayed that way down through the ages.
Other cultures are much more open and able to express themselves with sex. I read that some cultures have intercourse right in front of their children because the children are sleeping in the same room. They teach them not to feel ashamed and guilty, to understand and enjoy the act.

actually, from a historical standpoint we are much more open about sex in america than we have ever been. that is for america. other cultures, like greece, have very sexual histories (group orgies as common place, male prostitution, etc.) in america, we were often shamed and not allowed to even discuss sex. when elvis performed on the ed sullivan show, they refused to broadcast anything below his waist because of his suggestive pelvis thrusts. overt sex wasn't shown in movies and definitely not on tv.

in today's society, we have seen celeb's vaginas, countless simulated sex acts, real sex under covers at the mtv las vegas house, etc. even basic tv channels have sex laden shows, which are their most popular: desperate housewives, grey's anatomy, etc. that is all on standard cable, not the premium channels. daytime soaps feature simulated sex. programs like: talk sex, loveline, and dr. ruth all have strong followings and high ratings across the country and in global markets.

today's society is much more open about sex and sexuality than ever before. even though there are some sexual taboos still (pedophilia, public sex, etc) we talk about them more, educate each other on prevention, and express of views more openly than ever before. in previous decades, these topics were shameful secrets that weren't expressed in public. we no longer ship pregnant teens off to give secret births or shame women for being raped. this country has come a very long way.

btw, i am a sociology student conducting an anonymous study on sex and relationships at http://geocities.com/sbiv37/

i think sex and sexuality are taboo because people are uncomfortable with their own desires and responses to certain stimuli. For example, it is okay for a sixteen year old to find another sixteen year old attractive but less acceptable for a fifty year old to find a sixteen year old sexually appealing. if we are not comfortable with something it helps us to be outraged.
