This is my opinion (do you agree/disagree and why?)

I think it's stupid to wear uniforms. In real life, you're going to be judged on what you wear and that's life. That's how people are. Don't like it? OK, don't like it. But nothing is going to change. Students might as well get used to some people caring about what they wear and some not caring. They might as well just get used to being made fun of, but also finding some good friends.

Wearing uniforms, you may think, prevents "distractions". Then, what about sports? And clubs? And social events? Aren't they distractions? What are you pro-uniform people going to do with those? By taking away all these things, you're actually WORSENING the student's study abilities because you're not letting them have fun at school.

As for those who believe uniforms will reduce inappropriate clothing... where do you live? Do you seriously believe every student is plotting to wear bad clothes every day? If they want to be inappropriate, uniforms won't stop them. And there are VERY FEW people who ARE inappropriate but because you're judging and assuming, you think everybody is.

All I can say is, uniforms are basically bad. They have NO good outcomes. You are oppressing our youth by choosing what they wear. That is basically unconstitutional.

I also think we're better off without uniforms, though I do respect the choice of those who prefer them. Even respection their choice though, I can support my view against uniforms. For instance:
-less distractions: you've done a pretty good job with this one already, but to further it, the majority of the time that I've been distracted in any setting (school or not) it has not been clothes, it's been a person themself
-not having to choose what to wear: last time I checked, in order for kids to learn how to make choices we have to give them the opportunity... some children don't even understand what a choice is until into middle school now, and the sad thing is we're responsible for it.
-prepare for workplace: workplaces vary - some people have uniforms to wear, some have a strict dress code, some have a loose dress code, some are supposed to wear the newest fashions and others jeans and t-shirts while yet others are supposed to be nude... let's let people choose their career before we choose their clothes
-reduces teasing/makes it fair for all SES levels/look the same: students still know who receives what scholarship or grant and who can afford private tennis lessons as opposed to playing at the community park (also see next one for look the same)
-reduces crime: Did you that in California, a school district decided to implement school uniforms because they sought to decrease crime in an impoverished area? [No surprise so far.] The police complained after the shift - although the overall crime rate decreased some, it wasn't significant, and the number of crimes gone unsolved increased. With all the students in the same clothing, the police had little way of distinguishing gangs apart to know which crime was committed by who. The inability to separate gangs based on their colors also made it difficult to prevent crime. Makes you think twice, doesn't it?

School uniforms don't help get rid of social classes and distractions. People do all sorts of other things to the uniforms to keep that in. First of all it squashes creativity and individuality, like we havn't been doing that since forever. Second, social classes are still going to happen even if everybody is wearing the same thing. People know who has money and who doesn't and who likes what. Uniforms won't get rid of that. Lastly, clothes are a very small distraction. People create distractions by what they are doing, NOT what they are wearing. School Uniforms don't do anything except squash people. Yes it may be nice not to think about what you have to wear everyday but that is just not an excuse. My sister has to wear a relaxed uniform but they tell her that she can't wear certain colors because they are some gang's colors in 8 states away. That makes no sense.

I think uniforms are great. My daughter wore one for twelve years. No problems. Honor roll student, star athlete in three sports, state award of excellence in piano, etc.. School is one of the things in life that may not always be fun, if that is all you are looking for. The climate in most schools today for a lot of kids is "fun". School is for learning and EVERYTHING else is extracurricular. If more parents were more involved in their child's need to acquire a good education, and took the time to research the pros and cons of wearing uniforms maybe they could see the positive effect of wearing uniforms. Yes,we need to teach our children how to make their own wise decisions and choices in life. There are some decisions that MUST be made by parents. This is one of those decisions. As a boy there were many decisions my parents made I did not agree with then. Now as a successful adult I am so glad they were wise enough and strict enough not to allow me to do some of the stupid things I wanted to do. Let's applaud anything that will remove obstsacles to achieving a good education for our children.

I wore a uniform for 8 years.

It wasn't until after I graduated that I realized how great it was wearing it. I actually feel inferior to the more fashionable girls at my university.

A uniform unites the students of the particular school, and it also puts more students on an equal level. I went to a college prep school where uniforms were mandatory. We hated being forced to do anything, especially wearing the starched skirts or shorts.

However, I talked to a boy who went to a school that did not require uniforms and he carried on about how he hated 'preps' and how easy it was to identify a certain group of people that he wouldn't want to hang out with.

While many may see uniforms as a denial of their personal expression and freedom, I think it's more of a mask that makes others find out an individuals personality.

Agreed, uniforms must go it creates chaos and havoc all across the world granted most countries have been accustomed to the uniform but on the flip side most have not OK you have your few who might dress a little questionable but they might not know it and outside of the learning environment they are going to wear the same type of clothes any way so why not let them wear what ever they want in school too

I am a teacher in a private school and all students wear uniforms. From an educators point of view this makes my job much easier. I know exactly what to look for and know if there is someone walking around that should not be in the building.

We have special days each month for free dress and also have revised dress for Spirit Weeks and other school wide events.

I also am a parent of 3 children that attend private school. As a parent I am thrilled to have a dress code. The simplicity of mornings, cost, and durability are 3 major bonuses.

I will always be in favor of uniforms hands down. Thank you for voicing your side to the story and best of luck to you in your "anti-uniform" quest.

I'm not 100% for or 100% against... I know at my school it's helped a lot for the dress code issues (I personally don't want to see every guys underwear as they walk past me.) As for creativity I believe if you need clothes as an expression of who you are, maybe you should find a different creative outlet. Fashion is just an unimportant part of life. Yeah sometimes it sucks that I can't wear my jeans or flip-flops, but I don't really mind wearing a uniform and most the people I know that do wear them, don't really mind either. It's like getting a job and wearing what they require you to wear, you do it and get over it!

no, i dont think that students should ever have to wear uniforms. the only reason y school inform uniform is so kids wont be judged on how expense their clothes are, or how what of clothing they wear, but when it comes down to it, u can still be judged wearing uniforms too. like what kind of shows are u wearing with ur uniform or how. it doesnt matter if ur poor or rich. if u have clothes then u should be able to wear them. if u are rich and have the money to buy clothes then good that shouldnt affect other people.

Uniforms suck....I have been wearing them most of my life. They arent too bad, because I don't have to worry about picking out an outfit in the morning, but it gets old. Then, on top of that, my principal this year is taking away the ability to wear flashy jewelry and colorful shoes. Those were the only ways that we could express ourselves...

So basically, I don't like uniforms, but I like them at the same time.

I disagree, although I did wear a school uniform and yes I hated it, I think school is for learning not expressing your fashion sense!
It does take some of the distract away, not to mention that as a parent, it is a hell of a lot easier. And from a child's stand point, it made weekends that much more enjoyable because you could "choose" what to wear!

Personally, I think you have a very close-minded opinion!
