I have a Briggs & Stratton engine on an older MTD mower. It appears to be leaking a bit of gas inside the air filter housing, which is dripping out the bottom of the housing onto the deck.

It's not a huge amount, but about a drip a second or so. What could be causing this?

You said it was an older machine, so I would say the carb need to be rebuilt or replaced. The reason is the float valve is sticking allowing gas to flow through the carb when not needed.

Sounds like oil leaked into the air filter after you turned the mower on its side. First you will need to clean the air filter and NOT WITH GAS The best way to clean your air filter is with dawn dish washing liquid. its a great de-greaser and will clean the filter. Just make sure you let the filter dry completely before re-installing it. This should take care of the problem unless you leaked out too much oil while the mower was on its side so make sure you check the oil before using. Hope this helps.

A couple of things..the first could be a dirty air cleaner and the engine is pulling too much fuel into the carburetor and the fuel is running out the over-flow. The second thing I would check is a sticking or bad carburetor float. You can find the float under the carburetor bowl. It's function is to stop fuel after the bowl is full. You may have to remove the entire carburetor take it to a small engine repair shop and have it rebuilt.

The float valve is leaking, letting gas run into the carb and out the airbox. The carburetor needs to be disassembled, soaked in a good parts cleaner and rebuilt with a kit. If it is a diaphram carb it still has a similar valve and it is leaking.

The float needle seat is dirty or worn,or the float itself has a leak , causing excess fuel to come in and flood the carb. First off, before running the tractor anymore, check the oil for gasoline smell - if it does - DONT run it- it thins out the oil and basically will destroy the motor- change the oil. I would suggest cleaning the carb first , and for saftey put a fuel shutoff valve on the fuel line, and shut it when its not in use.

the air filter is mounted to the carb, so I assume you have checked the hose and seal. If it is coming out of the air filter, you probably have a stuck float. There is one bolt under the carb holding the bowl. There is a seal. Take it off and see if the float is stuck. Work it loose, check for a hole and lube it. If it needs replacing, there is one pin holding it on.
