I've just always wondered if there was some torture aspect to it, otherwise isn't it just a waste of materials? The tar can be cleaned off eventually...

If it was done all the way the person would be completely striped and hot tar pour all over their body and this hurts, particularly on the privates.

While the tar was still hot feathers would be dumped all over the body sticking to the tar. This makes the person look like a fool.

As a final act the person would be placed a straddle a rail which was a split fence piece with at least one sharp edge which was what the victim had to set on.

Then the mob would pick up the rail and carry the victim through the town. This would really hurt and often leave scars.

At some point the person would usually be taken to the edge of town and make to walk away don't come back.

It is anything but funny.
