Most Republican supporters are against the idea--saying that "democracy is just around the corner", and that "we are closer to victory than we ever have been in 4.5 years".

Clearly they are upset by Warner's suggestion of pulling out some of our troops from Iraq by Christmas.

However, the IDEA of dividing the country into three autonomous regions is a bad idea. In a nation such as this, each section would automatically be claimed by a country siding with each faction.

The Sunnis would go with the Saudis, and the Shiites with Iran. The Kurds would be happy--since they have their own country/nation-state.

Federalize the nation and keep the factions that can't stand each other away from each other; sounds like a good idea to me.

The problem is that a lot of oil is in the Kurdish controlled territory, and only if Kurdistan is a state of Iraq will those oil profits still belong to the nation of Iraq.

The US started as a collection of independent nations; the states, who worked together as a union. The first constitution; the Articles of Confederation didn't work well because they kept the US government too weak. The original intent of the Constitution was to improve the situation and keep the Federal Government weak. However, over the years (and with the power of taxation) the Federal Government became more powerful.

One of the big issues of the American Civil War was to determine if the Federal Government should take priority to the states. Since the union won it did. This is why the US has such a powerful federal government. The nation of the Netherlands is organized on a similar level. Holland is just one state of the Netherlands. To most Americans though Holland = the Dutch Nation.

In Iraq the opposite of a strong federal government might work best, due to the strong tribal nature of the people. Breaking it up into a nation of Federated States will maintain the power and size of the nation while providing an ethnic separation that could keep the peace. It is one possible solution to the crisis, but one that the US is not exploring.
