Why not make everything somebody doesn't like illegal? It's also dangerous to jump out of airplanes, drink beer, hangglide, waterski, box, play football, and walk across the street.

Yes, there are advantages to smoking. All the CHIPS healthcare for kids would be gone without the outrageous taxes on cigarettes. All states benefit from the high taxes on this legal product. The problem with make smoking illegal is that you are entering a slippery slope. What will be next? No Twinkies or chocolate allowed for anyone 10 or more pounds overweight? NO fried foods for anyone? The list goes on and on. When our government starts legislating personal choice our freedoms will disappear one by one. Trust me. We want the government out of our lives and bedrooms and much as possible. We don't need some "do gooder" legislating what we can and can't do. By the way, I don't smoke.

Why would anyone agree to smoking be illegal? We all have our rights and if you are smart you won't permit the country to take away your freedoms. For those that think it is ok then go to Russia and visit and see how you like it then.
You know what is so sad the alot of the same people that are against smoking cigarettes are the biggest pot heads...explain that. Also if you do it to cigarettes take away beer too -- you realize how many innocent people are killed by drunk driving each day.
Heck just stop counting our votes for president and let the courts decide who is president. OH SORRY - that's all ready happened....and look at the pathetic results when you take away freedoms.

Nope.
For one thing, as you said, that would just create a huge black market, especially since there are so many users now.
More importantly, it isn't the government's right to tell me what I can do with my own body. I know that secondhand smoke can cause damage, too, but that's why so many states have passed laws where you can't smoke in public places.
They should make fatty food illegal before they make cigarettes illegal. Obesity causes almost as many deaths as smoking cigarettes.

There are advantages to OTHER people smoking. Who is going to pay to make up the lost revenue of tobacco taxes? When I lived in Florida, I found that the retirement plan for teachers has stock investments in the tobacco business. Is this not strange? The number one reason tobacco is not made illegal is the big bucks it brings in.

I heard if you smoke, you have a lesser chance than other people of getting Alzheimers.
We live in a free country. Though, smoking is very bad for your health, people clearly see the warning labels and some continue to smoke. Second hand smoke is dangerous, so regulations should be made on where people are allowed to smoke...but other than that, we live in a free country...let them smoke.

All you people who can't control yourselves need laws telling you what to eat, to wear your seat-belt, and not to smoke. Sad.
