How did hospitals treat people with mental problems? Were all the patients in one room with several beds? Also, what did they eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner at that time in the U.S.?

Eww... Mac. Yeah, I figured people were extremely cruel and ignorant about mental illness back then. But my story is based on a children's cartoon, "LIberty's Kids" - and it needs to go in a better light, but one that isn't too out of century. I'm having trouble finding a middle ground.

In my story, the problems are depression and self-injury.

I actually am just writing the ending now - I've been writing this story for a long, long time. It's simply a story on the internet, but, again, I need a middle ground in where to go because, as a children's story, a sad ending is not wanted.

In the 1700s people with mental problems were not treated very well at all. In fact mental illness was not understood and crazy people were basically tortured into further insanity.

After being locked up in chains buck naked, the mentally ill were routinely beaten, doused with ice cold water, had their heads roughly shaved, fed swill for food, and were put on display for the paying public like a freak show.

This 1700 abuse of the mentally ill and retarded continued right up to the 1800s with the infamous 'Bedlam' hospital/prison for the insane.

Those are the things an author has to research in order to write a story. That is why we use the phrase "write about what you know". You have to become an expert on your topic. You are sitting in front of the greatest research tool ever available to mankind. The internet. Surf. Learn how to use it to find reliable resources. In France in the 1700's there was the asylum at Charenton. It wasn't a pretty place. It wasn't exactly people in beds being served 3 meals a day. It was a very cruel place where people were badly mistreated. I doubt they even acknowledged depression and self injury back then. Most of the people put in places like Charenton were outright crazy. Other people who suffered from things like depression were probably put in convents. Why have you chosen 1700's? Why not just write about now? You will have to do some searching to find more information. Make sure it is from reliable sites and not ones just made up by someone. You have a hard road ahead of you before you start writing. I estimate I spend 5 times the amount of time researching than I do actually writing. It is not easy. You will also have to research depression and self injury. You will not be able to just make it up. It will never get past a publisher or agent that way. Readers are pretty smart. They know when they are being decieved. Don't cheat your readers. Do the homework. Start by Googling Mental Illness in America 18th century. Pax- C
