how do you decide how many stars to rate it?
i think if it's the best answer it automatically should get 5 stars.

If the are the best answer by far they get 5 stars, but if it was a close call, they may only get 4

Sometimes even the best answer stinks, so if it was really really good, I will give it 5 stars, but if I just picked one to get my three points back I don't give very many stars.

Its a good thing to gain best answer - it is supposed to be the common sense ruling and the points are sufficient for now. How many stars a question gets is upto the readers and qualifiers of the assumption of a good question rating.

If the question answers everything I asked- 5. If it's the only answer to choose from and it sucks then 3. but I never give lower than a 3.
Most answers get a 5.

I have only given less on one of my questions and it was for the fact that I needed to choose and it was the only answer...the person had not really contributed fully, but that was the only time. I agree with you...if it is BA then it should get the 5 stars.
