Many public libraries have a music section. If you're copying it I'm not sure your legal status is any better than file sharing though.
Hey, I forgot! Junkies love to pawn their (and other peoples) CDs. You can pick 'em up cheap at the pawn shop.

Go to a site called soundclick.com. They have tons of free music downloads by many upcoming and unsigned bands (over a million songs). There are also very many good cover songs by bands you like. You may discover a new star yourself. Give them feedback,they appreciate your support a lot!

Don;t be stupid. Downloading music for free legally is impossible. All downloading sties that offer free music are illegal. If you don't want to pay for your music just borrow CD's from your friends or from the library and upload it to your computer and that's that. Free music and legal. Remember, you can't download free music legally but you can still get it for free.

limewire is illegal, and the people who's songs you are stealing care.
myspace and purevolume.com are the first places that come to mind. you just have to make sure the download button is active. download.com also has some songs.

You can purchase the songs because downloading them for free, unless authorized by the copyright owner, is essentially stealing.
