Water is great but when you are really working out hard and sweating a lot, you are also sweating out electrolytes (potassium, sodium, etc). This is why sweat tastes salty.

Water or "energy drinks" won't necessarily replace these. Rehydrating drinks like Gatorade or Powerade will help you more. I've been concerned about those, though, because they contain a fair amount of sugar and the calories you take in can match what you expend in exercising. Not to mention that all that refined sugar is doing you no good.

I suppose recognizing this, Powerade now has a rehydrating drink that appears to be artificially sweetened and has few calories. This works well for me. They also have a decent shot of B vitamins.

There is another very useful rehydrating agent that almost all long distance runners and cyclists like to consume: Beer. Especially "micros," which generally are not pasteurized and have no additives or preservatives (and if you think that the big beer makers don't use additives or preservatives, ask yourself why they always fight to keep ingredients off the labels). They are full of complex carbohydrates and B-complex vitamins and are one of the best things for rehydrating.

You need water -- not iced, just sort of cool. Plus salt -- have some salted popcorn or chips, preferably not too fatty. Plus potassium -- eat a piece of fruit or drink some fruit juice or V8. Beer, coffee, and tea are all diuretics, meaning that they dehydrate you even more. Stick to non-sweetened juices, plain water, and a salty snack.

If it's really HOT, don't risk working out in it. Heat exhaustion is unpleasant and can even be fatal. Go to a gym with air conditioning instead. If you really have to work those muscles, or get up very early and jog before sunrise.
