A paragraph can have any number of sentences in it. It could be just one, or it could be thirty, though that would be running on a bit. I believe what you are asking is how many sentences should you put in a paragraph for an English composition? In this case you should use as many as it takes to make your point. Five is a good average for a beginning writer, but if four to eight gets the job done, do what works.
Teachers don't want you to run on and on with the same paragraph. So when you change subjects put in a paragraph break.

Paragraphs are structured differently in different kinds of writing.

In non-fiction material, a paragraph starts with the main point, followed by sentences with supporting details. The non-fiction paragraph goes from the general to the specific to advance an argument or point of view. Each paragraph builds on what came before and lays the ground for what comes next. Paragraphs generally range two to eight sentences all combined in a single paragraphed statement.

In prose fiction and Literary writing paragraph structure is more abstract, depending on the writer's technique and the action of the narrative. Facts and parts of the narrative are ordered to achieve poignancy and support rhetorical devices. A paragraph in prose fiction can start with a single detail and enlarge the picture with successive details. The point of a prose paragraph can occur in the middle, near the end, or in the final sentence.

A paragraph can be as short as one word or run the length of multiple pages.

That depends on the type of writing and the context of the paragraph. Most newspaper articles have many single-sentence paragraphs, and rarely more than 2-3 sentences to a paragraph. In writing fiction, you may have fairly long (5-8 sentences) descriptive paragraphs interspersed with somewhat shorter (3-5 sentences) narrative paragraphs and 1-2 sentence dialog paragraphs. Expository writing usually has primarily fully developed paragraphs of 3-4 to 8 sentences with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Obviously, there is no hard and fast answer to your question. Study writings similar to what you wish to do, and follow their pattern.

There is 5 to 7 sentences in a paragraph

A paragraph may generally contain any number of sentences, BUT preferably they should all be employed in an orderly manner IN ORDER TO CONVEY A SINGLE IDEA (!), perhaps elaborating on it

--but that's the key -- one idea per paragraph, which also contains additional details and then at the end of the paragraph you start introducing the next idea, for the next paragraph...

that means that usually a well-written and easily-read paragraph won't contain more than 3-4 sentences, but it does not necessarily have to be so.

pretty simple stuff. Look at the meaning, write in an orderly and organized manner, don't look for fix ideas for writing

and another important tip: If you want to learn to write well - READ A LOT. Try to grasp the style that is used by authors you understand and like

that is sure to get you ahaed!

A paragraph can have different amount of sentences, even just one sentence, but I always like to make my paragraphs up of at least three sentences. Remember, always indent the beginning of your paragraphs.
