I drained the gas tank, cleaned the float bowl out, and put fresh gas in it. It seemed to help a little bit, but still pops every once in a while. And I put some Gas Line antifreeze (to take water out of gas) and it seemed to help a little more, but I still get the popping from the exhaust.

It can be caused by too much fuel. You may want to remove the carburetor and clean it properly. Put it back together with a rebuild kit. Another thing could be that the exhaust valve is not closing completly all the time. This can be due to a burned valve, valve out of adjustment(too tight) or carbon build up on the stem. The carbon build up could be caused by the carb needing cleaning and making the engine run too rich.

could be a bad plug or it may be out of time, sometimes the half moon key in the flywheel and crankshaft breaks and the magnet in the flywheel doesn't pass the coil at the right time to cause the plug to fire as the piston is in the correct position. This will cause a backfire. have a small engine mechanic check it out.

Back firring is when it back fires THRU the carburetor,
not the exuast, it is some what normal for the exuast to " pop"
at times, putting gas line antifreeze in a small engine will burn it up, [makes it fire too hot]

It's a Briggs is probably the main reason. Put a new plug in it.
