Sounds like he's getting used to his new environment

it takes fish anywhere from 7-10 days to get used to it, as long as he doesn't have a swollen abdomen, right beneath the head, he's fine

If he is swollen he most likely constipatet

Also make sure the temperature in your tank is between 75-82 degrees, that's where they will thrive and also their colors will become more beautiful

hope that helps
Good luck

The people at petco will be of no use to you. They usually know squat about anything. Odds your new friend is sulking, sometimes they just hate being moved into a new tank. As long as the tank has plenty of plants and a cave or 2 your little guy will recover himself and start exploring and being active. If your water is too cold, he will be sluggish until you get a heater.

He's probably traumatized from life in a small tank. I've seen those betta fish in little tubs at the pet store and it kinda freaks me out that they would do that to an animal. Maybe you should give him a bigger tank and some cool fake plants to swim around with or some tank mates, like snails and whatnot. Fish are sensitive to small changes.
