I am from California (moved here from SF) and I've lived in Dubai since Oct.

Do not listen to the answer suggesting Sharjah, the last place you want to live is Sharjah, it's very religious and strict. As an American used to Freedom I don't think you would be happy there.

Dubai rents are comparable to SF. That's the only thing as expensive. Food is cheap compared to USA. Taxis are really cheap, no reason to buy a car if you live in the right area.

If you email I can call information and see if your friends number is listed.

If you have any more questions feel free to email.

maybe we can help each other. I plan on moving to Dubai after I graduate college her in the US in June 2008. I going to fly there on a visit visa then look for a job afterwords. And yes. Dubai is very expensive. I recommend living in Sharjah, which is a lot cheaper and only 15 minutes away.

Dubai is expensive in terms of accomodation (renting or owning a flat). The rest (food, appliances, etc.) are not because its a tax-free city.
