on windows XP, what is the disc defragmenter and what does it do?

The defragmenter reorganizes your C drive and makes it run faster. Do a search for--Auslogics defrag--download it and use it instead of the one that comes with windows-its much quicker, and free. I defrag at least once a month, you need to do it for regular pc maintenance.

On your hard drive files get jumbled around and moved and put into pieces all the time. Disc defragmenter puts all the files back together so they're not in separate pieces. Doing this will also improve system speed.

A good analogy for defragmenting would be if you cut the pages from a book now shuffle them. You could still read the book but you would constantly looking for page numbers.
Over time this is what happens to a hard drive.
Defragmenting puts these “pages” back in order.

it cleans up space on ur comp . it's kinda like tetris when u mess up the game u see gaps disc defragmentor fills in these gaps
